Regeneration of a green space as the focus of urban revitalization in Los Barrios
With the aim of regenerating the public space of the village of Palmones, located in the Cádiz municipality of Los Barrios and serving as an environmental and urban refuge for industrial activity in the Algeciras bay, we designed a project for the Urban Public Space Regeneration Program of the Junta de Andalucía (ERDF 14-20). The project was selected for funding and the City Council asked us for support during the implementation phase.
THE CHALLENGE
Despite its landscape and ornithological value, Palmones suffers from degraded public spaces, deteriorating green areas, over-reliance on private transport and a lack of meeting spaces for residents and visitors. The challenge lies in revitalizing the village economically, socially and culturally while enhancing its appeal as a tourist and commercial destination.
THE SOLUTION
Our work involved supporting Los Barrios City Council in designing the urban regeneration project for Paseo Marítimo Park. This included all phases of the intervention, from diagnosis and strategy development to proposals of uses for the space, budgeting and maintenance planning. We also conducted citizen participation initiatives, assessed the project’s feasibility and alignment with municipal planning, and evaluated its impact using an indicator system. Subsequently, we assisted the City Council with citizen participation and detailed co-design of the green space to prepare for its activation and eventual construction.
