A new model of sustainable mobility for commuting to work in Fuenlabrada
To create an innovative sustainable mobility model in the city of Fuenlabrada, we drafted a project for the IDAE (Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving) call, within the framework of the ERDF MOVES initiative for innovative projects. Khora co-designed the project in 2022 and was selected from numerous proposals. The Khora team launches MOVES Commuting Limpio Fuenlabrada and accompanies the City Council throughout the entire execution and monitoring process.
THE CHALLENGE
Fuenlabrada needed a sustainable mobility model to reduce car usage for commuting to work, promoting more ecological alternatives. This led to the idea of combining bicycle and suburban train systems, aiming to foster a change in citizens’ mobility habits to improve the quality of urban life.
THE SOLUTION
The proposed idea evolved into a pilot project implemented with a series of actions. A comprehensive plan was divided into five lines of action: reorganization and urban design with safe routes for cyclists; implementation of measures such as the provision of bicycles and the creation of cycling routes; improvement of school mobility with Kiss & Go zones and safe parking facilities; an awareness plan to promote sustainable mobility; and a citizen participation plan to identify needs and preferences. These measures are complemented by the creation of a mobile application and a program for the free transfer of bicycles and electric scooters to citizens, encouraging a shift in mobility habits in Fuenlabrada. Over 200 bicycles have been used by Fuenlabrada residents for their daily commutes to work.
