We designed the Integrated Sustainable Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI) SBT 2020 for San Bartolomé de Tirajana, aimed at removing physical and social barriers, promoting sustainable mobility and preserving its natural and cultural heritage.
THE CHALLENGE
San Bartolomé de Tirajana, a municipality located in the south of Gran Canaria Island, faces significant tourist pressure. Every year, it receives a visitor population of 36 times the size of its local population; this results in limited diversification of the local economy, reliant on a low added-value service sector, as well as seasonal pressure on the urban environment with numerous risks. Additionally, municipal sprawl and physical barriers lead to significant spatial segregation of residential areas, creating a mobility model heavily dependent on private vehicles. The spatial segregation also exacerbates the challenges faced by communities at risk of poverty and social exclusion.
THE SOLUTION
At Khora, we supported the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council in the design of the EDUSI SBT 2020, focused on creating a cohesive and supportive city, focused on creating a cohesive and supportive city through active citizen participation. The strategy included combating poverty, fostering innovation, diversifying the local economy and developing projects that ensure economic, environmental and social sustainability. Additionally, we collaborated on the planning, citizen participation, strategic design, and drafting of the report. This project was submitted and selected in 2017 during the third call by ERDF funds of the Ministry of Finance
