With the Integrated Sustainable Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI) León Norte, we seeked to transform León’s economic and urban model to address the challenges of demographic regression, social and economic segregation, and lack of opportunities for young people.
THE CHALLENGE
León is a city with great potential; however, its economic base has been shrinking, a lack of opportunities for young people has led to demographic decline, compromising the city’s resilience. In addition, a series of physical problems exacerbate the city’s challenges, intensifying the social and economic segregation in certain areas.
THE SOLUTION
We supported the León City Council in designing and drafting the EDUSI, focused on the reconnecting segregated neighbourhoods by transforming the railway into an urban and eco-friendly tramway. It also includes recovering spaces for local economy development, entrepreneurship and housing. This EDUSI was submitted in 2016 and selected in 2017 during the second ERDF funding call by the Ministry of Finance.
